Salt Malaysia supporting PERTIWI soup kitchen in Kuala Lumpur

A special Monday night for the Salt Malaysia team when they joined hands with a group of volunteers at the PERTIWI mobile soup kitchen. This is just one of several community outreach projects run by PERTIWI, dedicated to providing food aid to the homeless and poor. A huge crowd gathered outside the feeding centre @Medan Tuanku, Kuala Lumpur; including mothers and children. Hundreds of meals, drinks and snacks were distributed. A well-coordinated effort by PERTIWI – thanks for reminding us of what it means to be kind to others

Pertubuhan Tindakan Wanita Islam (PERTIWI) is a project-oriented charitable organisation dedicated to addressing the welfare and needs of women and children.

Since its formation on 17 November 1967, PERTIWI has played a vital role in providing various forms of assistance. This has included lobbying for women’s rights in Malaysia, educating, nurturing and empowering women, while maintaining their traditional family role. Some of PERTIWI’s social missions and welfare activities include the provision of literacy skills and education awareness seminars, provision of medical aid to remote villages, sponsorships for educating foster children, and the provision of skills training for single mothers, among other programmes. PERTIWI’s activities are run by a central committee and by groups of volunteers from all walks of society. To help extend its reach into the community, PERTIWI commenced its mobile soup kitchen project in 2010 to provide free meals to the hard-core poor and homeless people.

How You Can Help

There are three ways you can help:

  1. The public or corporations can contribute by donating funds to pay for the cost of the meals provided. RM1,140 will provide a meal for at least 300 people.
  2. Soup kitchens attract public interest because the experience of feeding someone who is hungry is immediately rewarding. If you are able to contribute your time on a regular basis, even once a month, you may be interested in becoming a volunteer.
  3. You can also help by telling people about this important community project.
