Lead Systems Engineer

Greater London Permanent £50000.00 - £60000.00 per annum + benefits

A client of mine seeks a skilled Lead Systems Engineer to join the company’s System Engineering
team. The position reports to the Head of Engineering. Primary responsibilities will be to
manage the company’s Systems infrastructure, maintaining it to a high standard; implement
and maintain processes around the Systems architecture;

Primary responsibilities will be to assist in managing the company’s global System
Administration function to a high level of capability; developing and maintaining the
company’s System Administration processes; providing technical support to operations and
providing solutions support to sales for existing and new customers.

● Review System Engineering processes and identify modifications to ensure that
functionality and performance requirements continue to meet the needs of the customers
and achieve the company’s business objectives.
● Keep abreast of System Engineering developments and develop contacts with relevant
organisations in the industry for the exchange of ideas and information, such as MPAA
and FACT.
● Develop strategies for System Engineering programs and processes.
● Design and implement System Engineering technologies.
● Develop, recommend, and review policies of Engineering relating to systems.
● Implement System Engineer policies, specifications and certification methodologies.
● Check and inspect computer systems periodically in accordance with Systems
Engineering policies and procedures.
● Assist in project management to ensure that they deliver timely and cost effective results
to agreed quality standards and meet targets for customer satisfaction.
● Effect research for proposals of new systems, upgrades, projects and solutions.
● Work with the Product Management function to conduct research and testing as necessary
and to assist in obtaining whatever System Engineering accreditation is required for new
and existing products.
● Maintain close links with operations and sales teams to ensure that appropriate System
Engineering systems are in place and resourcing is available to meet the customer’s needs.

SKILLS & EDUCATION
● Experience in the design, construction and operation of complex distributed systems.
● Strong knowledge of all systems in use at their company including (Debian, Ubuntu and a
small number of windows systems).
● In-depth knowledge of and experience with System engineering tasks, techniques
(e.g.,System hardening and security, kernel profiling and tuning, kernel and package
compilation)
● Detailed knowledge of System Administration and Engineering mechanisms and
components (e.g., Configuration Management (Puppet), DR systems, System
Provisioning, exposure to LVM and mdadm Management )
● Programming skills (Python, Shell, Bash, Perl, Ruby)
● Experience with monitoring systems (OpenNMS, Graphite, Collectd, ELK, Sensu etc)
● Hypervisor administration using Libvirt (Xen, VMware ESXi, Citrix XenServer,
VirtualBox)
● System Capacity Planning
● AWS infrastructure management experience is desirable.
● Working knowledge of Networking and system security is essential
● Exposure to Openstack Infrastructure, particularly Swift, is desirable but not essential.

● Ideally have 2 years management experience within technology focused organisation.
● 5 years industry experience with a track record of success.
● Will be able to act as a mentor for junior members of the team.
● Experienced in dealing with sales functions and can influence and contribute to the design
of new products and services.
● Experienced at representing an organisation at technical conferences and related
professional societies.
● First class interpersonal, communication and leadership skills at all levels within an
organisation, across all departments and professional disciplines.
● Outgoing personality who will develop the reputation of the engineering team within the
company and the industry.
● An individual who possess excellent organisation skills.
● Bright intellect with a depth and breadth of personal and professional experiences.
● Hold themselves and others accountable for results
