Opportunities for Full Stack Developers

Full stack developers are in high demand due to the role essentially comprising two roles. In small organizations, this position is particularly coveted, as it is cost-effective. However, in large organizations which can afford to hire dedicated frontend and backend developers, a full stack developer will provide support for when the team is overloaded or if a developer is on leave. These developers are also known to be more skilled as a result of their overall understanding of the software development lifecycle.

Popular Industries for Full Stack Developers

Due to the all-encompassing nature of the role, and the ever-present need for web development, careers in full stack development can take candidates into any industry.

Recent changes in the Full Stack Development sector

Thanks to the versatility of the role, full stack developers are arguably the most sought after team members in any sector. However, different companies will require different full stack developers, due to the variety of programming languages and technologies in which they could specialise.

Future Prospects

Full stack developers will continue to be in demand in the future, with a particular emphasis being put on finding candidates who are fluent in NodeJS, AngularJS, ReactJS, and cloud technologies.

  • Salt’s advice for getting a new Full Stack Development job

    Employers’ Requirements

Employers will often seek out full stack developers depending on the coding language they are most familiar with. These include PHP, NodeJS, React, and Java, amongst others. Candidates should also demonstrate a willingness to learn and stay up to date with their knowledge of these languages and the development sector at large. Full stack developers are prized for their versatility, so they must be able to show qualities of fast learning and adaptability.

    CV Requirements

The CV of the ideal full stack developer candidate should be able to demonstrate their knowledge in action. While it is essential to list any programming languages in which they are fluent, a link to a portfolio site, such as an active GitHub or StackOverflow account, will give jobseekers a serious boost. They should also be able to explain previous projects and detail when and how their experience has been put to use in these situations.

    Job Interview Preparation

Job seekers should prepare for an interview by researching the STAR principle of interview responses, which requires outlining a situation, describing the task required, going through the actions taken, and explaining the result. Due to the technical nature of these roles, a straightforward approach to answering interview questions is often appreciated.

Interviews for full stack development vacancies are generally based around the theory behind the technology. Hiring managers are interested in how much candidates truly understand coding, so even if a written test of coding knowledge is required, they should also be able to explain why they wrote it as they did and the reasoning behind choosing a particular technology.

    Educational Requirements

For small and medium-sized companies, degrees are not as important as technical skills. However, no matter the level of the role, larger corporations will often prefer to hire candidates with at least a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or another related subject.

Top Tip

"Always keep up to date with the latest technologies, at least be aware of them. Especially technologies in DevOps that tend to reduce time during development. Keep that StackOverflow and Github account active!"
