What is SEO?

Search engine optimisation (usually known as SEO) is the process of making sure a website or webpage is primed to rank on the first page of, or even at the top of a search engine results page. In practice, SEO jobs involve researching relevant keywords, analysing web data, writing optimised copy, and creating reports on traffic and rankings.

SEO consultant jobs can be done freelance, or at an agency, and you may find yourself optimising websites for a number of different clients, or for a business in-house. In an SEO job, you’re likely to work with a variety of analytical software programs in order to track a site’s performance. Campaigns will also involve outreach to online influencers, in order to generate traffic and a diverse range of backlinks.

Opportunity within the SEO industry

SEO jobs are in great demand, and that is only set to grow in the coming years. According to Conductor’s 2018 marketing jobs survey, openings for SEO jobs are up by 43% year-on-year, while roles in content marketing are up 33%. Furthermore, with investors pumping $9.1 billion into Asian startups this year alone, it’s unlikely that anyone with the right skills will struggle to find a job in SEO, no matter how many other candidates are in the pool.

    Employers’ Requirements

    Employers will expect those applying for SEO jobs to have in-depth knowledge of how search engines work in their chosen territory, as well as internationally. You should be familiar with analytics tools, and ideally, have demonstrable experience of increasing a brand’s search rankings in a previous role.

    CV Requirements

    It’s important to highlight your previous experience on a CV for an SEO job, but make sure your experience is recent as the industry moves at a swift pace.
