Volunteering day at the Ronald McDonald House

Earlier in the week, 17 staff from Salt London headed to our local Ronald McDonald House to cook evening meals for the families that stay there. The charity provides accommodation for families with ill children to help keep them together and near the care and resources they need. This house was brand new with three floors and specially adapted rooms – right near the hospital. We were informed that at any time, the house was a temporary home to 59 families.

After spending long days at the hospital, the last thing these parents wanted to do was come back and cook for themselves and their little ones, so the house invites teams to come and prepare freshly cooked meals for the families. We split into teams and whipped up three dishes and three desserts for them to tuck into. We opted for comfort food that could be easily reheated and went with Lasagne, Veggie Pasta Bake and a fantastic Coq-Au-Vin with mashed potatoes and green beans. For dessert; brownies, sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble, all prepared in an industrial-sized kitchen and ready on the table for 5:30 pm for when families start making their way back from the hospital.

As we were washing up, we met some of the families and heard some of the stories from the team that ran the house. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that was both enjoyable and humbling and something the company will be delighted to be involved in again.

The house has many different opportunities for you or your company to get involved with. To find out more information click here.
