What is Digital Consulting?

With the media industry evolving rapidly over the last decade or so, the landscape has changed entirely. This change has created huge uncertainty for businesses, yet the cost of hiring in-house experts in all of the emerging digital fields is beyond the reach of most. This is where digital consultants step in.

Digital consultants lend their extensive digital knowledge to businesses and build a holistic plan they can follow. Some of a digital consultant’s responsibilities include:

SEO

One of the key roles of a digital consultant is search engine optimisation (SEO). Whilst a digital consultant might not handle day-to-day SEO tasks, they will outline an SEO strategy and oversee its execution.

Advertising

Consultants will advise businesses on various digital advertising considerations. This includes decisions on how exactly they should be advertising online and how much of the budget should be going on pay per click (PPC) advertising campaigns.

Social media

There’s much more to social media than sharing gifs – digital consultants will advise businesses on which platforms are most suitable for them and develop a strong strategy for the social networks they use.

Salary Information and Career Progression

Junior Consultant£35,000 - £45,000
Consultant£55,000 - £65,000
Junior Consultant£65,000 - £75,000
Managing Consultant£75,000 - £85,000
Principal Consultant£85,000 - £95,000
Director£35,000 +

Opportunity

With more brands requiring effective digital marketing, the demand for digital consultants is at an unprecedented level. There’s a huge need for consultants adept in a wide range of online marketing methods, from SEO to social media.

The demand is particularly high in developing economies, where innovative ideas and solutions are particularly needed. Therefore, it can be highly advantageous for consultants to have spent time abroad and speak foreign languages.

Like in the past, consultant roles are extremely competitive and consulting firms are still very selective in their hiring process.

  • Recent Changes in the Digital Consulting Industry

Consulting is now rarely ever a one-off job, and it has become more and more important for consultants to work with companies over a long period of time and constantly monitor their progress. This type of consulting is known as relationship consulting, and has higher fees due to the longer contracts involved. By informing a company’s long term digital strategy, digital consultants are more pivotal than ever before.

  • Future Prospects

Thanks to the affordable accessibility of electronic tools and the availability of data, it has become easier for smaller companies to compete against larger firms in the marketplace. Because of this, more smaller firms than ever need consultancy services. This creates greater future job opportunities for consultants, as well as more openings where they can enjoy alternative working environments. Consultants working in a small company can usually enjoy more autonomy and a lot less pressure than they would in a larger organisation.

Considering digital consultants help to bridge the gap between businesses and the online world, enabling companies to market themselves in the right way, it seems they will continue to be sought after for the foreseeable future.

  • Salt’s advice for getting a job in digital consulting

    Employers’ Requirements

Digital consultants must have a keen understanding of the internet’s importance as a marketing tool and how to harness its power to market a brand. Specifically, they should have excellent problem-solving and communication skills, as well as information technology and numeracy skills.

It is also imperative that digital consultants are goals-orientated, considering they are usually responsible for a company’s whole digital strategy. This not only entails being able to set achievable goals, but being capable of successfully measuring success.

    CV Requirements

When recruitment consultants scan through a CV, some of the core competencies they look for include: leadership ability, entrepreneurial attitude and interpersonal skills. It’s not just a candidate’s hard skills that will get them the job, but their soft skills too.

Digital consultants should also be able to demonstrate their impact in previous roles. Employers need to know the effects of a candidate’s input and the objectives and outcomes of previous projects they’ve overseen. It is also a good idea to include specific numbers in your CV to give employers a greater understanding of your work.

    Interview Preparation

The most typical interview form for consulting jobs are case study interviews. In these interviews, employers present a made-up or real business situation to the jobseeker and ask them to find a solution for it. Sometimes the cases are extremely difficult and the employers do not actually expect that the interviewees can solve the problem.  Instead, they are more interested in how they try to find a solution in a structured, logical and innovative way.

    Educational Requirements

There are a couple of qualifications which can help consultants land a job. One of these would be a degree in business management, business studies or a similar subject. Many top consultancies also expect their future employees to have a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. Since most applicants for consultancy jobs have a relevant degree, it is difficult to compete against them without a similar qualification.
