My client is a market leading ‘EdTech’ specialist and provider of services across the UK. It provides technology-led services,

The successful candidate’s initial role will be to insource the systems that are currently outsourced to a supplier. They will need to define, scope, specify, build and manage a new in-house system that can support the business’s rapid growth ambitions. It is important that the new CTO is a holistic business leader and a key part of the senior leadership team i.e. they need to build and manage technology that reflects the business and reinforces the company USP, rather than trying to build the technology first and trying to fit the business to it. The systems platform needs to cover the breadth of activities in the business from CRM/sales pipeline management, coach supplier inventory, bookings and completion of journeys, project management activities (for new customer on-boarding) daily coach tracking and notifications to customer & parents via bespoke Apps.

The Opportunity

An exceptional opportunity now exists to join The Senior Leadership Team as the new CTO.

Benefiting from a high profile in an entrepreneurial and extremely customer focused organisation, the successful candidate will be an integral member of the management team. You will gain exposure and provide input to key strategic and commercial issues, and play a pivotal role in driving the future growth and success of the business. The leadership team have a strong understanding of how to scale the business; however, the team is missing the technology DNA – in particular someone to set and drive key strategies on technology and mobile.

The right candidate will not be constrained by job descriptions or role specifications, but instead will embrace the vision and build their own place in the business, empowered with real responsibility and accountability. There are significant opportunities to apply industry standard techniques to improve acquisition costs, customer experience and operating metrics.

The Scope

  • Operate at a Senior Leadership level as the “technology and digital voice” of the group;
  • Define and deliver the company’s Technology Strategy.
  • Develop the company’s USP / market position and lead “go to market” for eCommerce, digital and mobile services.
  • Provide innovation and technical leadership and added value commercial input.
  • Lead and drive critical decisions in areas such as the definition, design, build, procurement, resourcing and investment of the technology platform.
  • Ensure delivery of solutions and developments that meet the company’s business requirements, on-time and on budget.
  • Manage procurement, vendor selection and key contracts and relationships, including ensuring appropriate due diligence and structuring of contracts etc.
  • Optimise use of data and customer insight to enhance revenue and profit opportunities.
  • Monitor and optimise security and performance, including consideration of business continuity and disaster recovery issues.
  • Develop, maintain and report value added KPIs and other management information to ensure performance is measured, tracked and managed effectively and in real-time.
  • Own the budget for eCommerce, operational systems, digital and mobile activities.

The Person

  • The existing platform is LAMP stack based, running on AWS IaaS and this will continue to need to be , whilst the new platform follows serverless design principles, so uses AWS FaaS and PaaS functionality, built with Javascript for client, mobile and server.
  • The CTO will need experience of architect and developing software product, building and running in-house software teams.
  • CTO’s that have built SaaS products would be ideal, especially if they have implemented more advanced AWS PaaS/FaaS technology
  • Proven track record of performance and delivery in an entrepreneurial, dynamic organisation.
  • Able to operate in a business with an open challenge, short hierarchy and “can do, will do” culture.
  • Demonstrable experience of creating and successfully executing a technology and digital Strategy, preferably in a credible, operational and customer focused business.
  • Must be able to provide strategic direction and leadership, apply long-term and creative strategic thinking whilst also be willing to be hands on and deliver.
  • Experience of operating at a strategic and senior leadership level.
