Job Description

The Met Office is seeking a candidate to join our internal IT Infrastructure team, the candidate is targeted to be an escalation point for complex technical problem resolution and general on-premise systems management.

The successful candidate will operate as Technical Expert for Microsoft technologies within what is known as the Technical Delivery team. They will be the focal point for technical expertise within the team and have day-to-day responsibility for ensuring work within the team is carried out to a high technical standard that aligns with the processes already in place.

As other requirements arise the successful candidate will be expected to research, develop, and implement novel solutions to problems. Most of the solutions will require a level of adaptability to work with off-the-shelf Microsoft solutions and work to integrate them into the current production environments.

The candidate can demonstrate the ability to design, implement, administer and support infrastructure technologies, solutions and services. These can include computing, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, commercial-off-the-shelf software (COTS), and open source packages and solutions. They can also include virtual and cloud computing such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS).

You can show a thorough understanding of the technical concepts required for the role, and can explain how these fit into the wider technical landscape. You can break a problem down into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes. You can troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities.

The successful candidate will be expected to mentor colleagues on both a planned and ad-hoc basis. This will also be true for many other areas such as PowerShell, troubleshooting Windows OS, root cause analysis, and resolution.

Essential Criteria

  • Strong Experience of on-premise core technologies, including: Windows Server 2012/2016/2019, Windows 10, Active Directory, Group Policy, NPS
  • Strong Experience of the following cloud services MS Azure, O365.

o Exchange (Hybrid 2016), Teams, SharePoint online, AzureAD, MFA, Endpoint Manager, Microsoft Defender ATP

  • Experience with PowerShell to automate management tasks
  • Proven experience in configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting various network related protocols (IP, DHCP, DNS, VPN, 802.1x, etc)
  • Experience with virtualised environments (VMware & Azure)
  • Experience of infrastructure Monitoring solutions for enterprise server (e.g. SCOM, Solarwinds.)
  • Awareness of IT Security, patching and vulnerability management, and ability to follow best practice guidance.
  • Experience of endpoint management solutions such as MECM, WSUS to manage server & client patching/application deployment

Technical Skills (Desirable)

  • Good working knowledge of managing Microsoft SQL Server.
