Unix Systems Engineer (AIX, HACMP, Shell Scripting, CA7, Testing) – Banking – Brussels / Braine

Rate: 500 – 550

Length: 1-year contract

My client is keen to hire a UNIX Systems Engineer for the Production Integration UNIX Team (PIU) ensures the transition of UNIX applications into the production environment :

1/ Analyse the impacts of a new/modified applications on the production environment :
* Ensure applications can be operated into the production environment in a simple and efficient way.
* Organise the scheduling of jobs, processes and tasks into the most efficient sequence, maximising throughput and utilisation to meet business requirements.

2/ Implement the following components :
* Scheduling definitions (CA7, XPS).
* Operation scripts (Shell, Perl, Python…).
* Operational Procedures (stop, start, restart application), Operational Documentation, Operational Tools.

3/ Participate to testing strategy and provide test requirements to validate the production acceptance criteria.

4/ Deploy applications within test, pre-production and production environments :
* Ensure applications can be released into the production environment in a simple and efficient way; ensure a back-out option has been included in the release.
* Prepare for deployment and deploy applications in test, pre-production, and production environments.
* Automate the deployment by means of Ansible playbooks according to corporate standards and guidelines

5/ Provide second level support to Production Operations :
* Participate to the Incident and Problem Management processes.

6/ Contribute to some DeVops/Agile pilot projects as integrator. Insure deployment automation in the context of a continuous Delivery

Your part of the deal:

This position is primarily for a EB (Braine) based IT Production Integrator Developer although there will be opportunity to work with colleagues in London.
The Unix Systems Engineer will be able to perform the responsibilities as defined below in 3-6 months of starting the job. Opportunity will be provided to gain experience through technical training and mentoring of the skills required for the role.
Candidates having French language skills or the willingness to learn the French language will have more opportunity to work on group projects.
Some weekend support may be required plus there will travel to several places in Europe.

Your responsibilities will be :

1/ Integrate applications within the production environment
For new or re-worked applications, design (analyse the impacts of a new/modified application on the production environment) and implement the following topics in the production environment:
* Map the applications on the physical production topology. For the distributed systems this concerns the physical mapping between applications and servers
* Application Backup and Recovery
* Application Monitoring and Alert Management
* Application Scheduling and Control
* Production Operations readiness: Operational Procedures (stop, start, restart, operation scheduling, control system, rerun), Operational Documentation and Operational Tools
* Participate to testing strategy and provide test cases to validate the production acceptance criteria

2/ Deploy applications within test and production environments
* Launch applications into test and production environments.
* Train Production Operations staff to applications’ operational procedures, documentation and tools.
* Automate the deployment process

3/ Validate Production Acceptance Criteria for implementation.

4/ Define policies and standards
* Contribute to the definitions of guidelines, procedures, best practices, regarding integration of application within the production environment.

2/ Technical Specification
Good experience in:
* Linux environments, Aix (incl. HACMP and pacemaker cluster) is a plus
* Unix Shell, Perl and Python scripting. PHP is a plus.
* IBM Websphere MQ Series
* IBM Websphere Application Server, Jboss
* Oracle – SQLPLUS (Some SQL knowledge to perform queries)
* Knowledge of testing concepts
* Familiar with project management methodology and project lifecycle (V-model & SCRUM/Agile).
* Ansible – playbook development for deployment automation, Tower is a plus
It should be noted that although a high degree of technical competence is required this is NOT a development role.
