Ruby Engineers

This role is perfect for an experienced Ruby Engineer who wants to continue to hone their craft in a software, data and content start-up raising one of the biggest Series A’s in London this year.
We have a mature and stable tech stack and a codebase which is not crazily complicated, which allows for fast design iterations, short development cycles and quick fixes when challenges spring up.

We’re not a deep tech company, and we don’t pretend to be. What is complex about our solution is how we’re using tech to solve a challenge specific to human interactions and behaviours. Ultimately this is a tech solution to a people problem, improving one of the last essential areas of our social infrastructure that remains largely untouched by technology.

A little about you

  • You are a back-end ruby Engineer working on client-facing products (not internal tools)
  • You write and ship code in a production environment
  • You understand relational databases – MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL etc ● You understand cloud storage, with Heroku preferred
  • You are comfortable writing complex SQL queries and can help an operations team who aspire to do the same
  • You appreciate the nuances of agile and scrum, and understand where and when to apply them to add value
  • It would be helpful if you have Ruby on Rails or React skills, or an appetite to learn them
  • Knowledge of AWS may come in handy, as would proficiency with GitHub, CircleCI, Tachyons, Redis, ES6

How you like to work

  • Allowing for the potential for change that comes in a scaling start-up, you’ll be open to task switching where necessary
  • You value testing, whether unit or TDD, and advocate clean code
  • You enjoy a healthy culture of code review, and are comfortable explaining your decisions
  • You understand that your cross-functional colleagues may not be technical, and have an appetite to share practices and support development
  • You believe in iterating, fast learning-loops and the value of feedback
  • You are comfortable working with non-tech people and curious to find effective solutions to real-world problems

Our priority is making sure we’re using the right tools for the job and we’re open to adding to or adjusting our tech and tooling as appropriate – opinions are welcomed.

We’re continuously improving our product, building key features that will move the needle in a big way. Instead of an endless product roadmap, we run short development cycles to test assumptions and make smart decisions quickly. We favour feature flags over staging environments and deploy to production as often as we need to.

About the team:
We have an informal, hard-working and kind team culture. We’re all passionate about our mission and are determined to create a truly fantastic childcare service to help working parents. Our culture is friendly and fast paced – we are constantly challenging, testing and adapting the way we do things. We’re also really committed to working with integrity, doing the right thing and building a company we are truly proud of. We’re growing super fast but we also want to make sure that we are building a company on really solid foundations. We take great care with who we hire and all team members are superbly talented and really nice. If you’re brilliant AND humble, you’ll fit right in.

Other information:

  • Based in a WeWork in Old Street, you get nice coffee machines, free yoga classes, and a secure bike room & showers.
  • 25 days holiday a year.
  • As a proud equal opportunity employer we are supportive of flexible working patterns, and alternative working arrangements. We are committed to hiring candidates based on business needs, job requirements, and candidate qualifications, without regard to individual’s characteristics or backgrounds.
  • Our offices are step-free, and have non-gendered bathrooms.
