This morning, the eager Salt, Digital Recruitment Agency, Singapore team rose at 6am to make to our Christmas CSR session with Willing Hearts – one of the largest ‘food-aid’ initiatives in Singapore.
Willing Hearts is a remarkable enterprise wholly run by volunteers, apart from a handful of dedicated core staff. It operates a soup kitchen that prepares, cooks and distributes about 5,000 daily meals to over 40 locations island wide, 365 days a year. Beneficiaries include the elderly, the disabled, low income families, children from single parent families or otherwise poverty stricken families, and migrant workers in Singapore.
As such we were absolutely delighted to be able to contribute to such a valued and productive cause. We were also highly impressed as a group by the efficiency and sheer volume of production on display. When we turned up, we slotted very easily into our respective roles, ladling chicken and rice into boxes, or boiling up large vats of vegetables for distribution. I guess it’s a feature of Singapore as a whole that it’s so organised and structured and, I have to say, this was no exception! The staff and regular helpers on site were extremely helpful and welcoming too in terms of enabling us navigate our roles for the morning.
As we left, we noticed a bus-load of school children arriving, and their designated activity on arrival was baking cakes, albeit on massive scale as we witnessed all the ingredients being prepared for their arrival. This continuing 12 hour per day hive of production at the very heart of the community was our lasting impression of this fantastic organisation. It so great such services can be made available in a way that helps to educate those of school age and, of course, provide wonderful team building CSR focussed activities for willing folks like us!
