Commercial Director

Reporting into the Managing Director (Africa), the Commercial Director helps drive sales and business development activities for our clients.

Initial targets will focus on Johannesburg and Gauteng companies, whilst we expand business relationships and terms across multiple divisions (tech, creative, etc.), and on key account management projects with our global offices. Wider Africa targets will follow.

This role will have commercial responsibility for the Tech, Creative, Marketing and Sales Practices at Salt for both perm and contract recruitment, whilst the scope will be working with the Sales Leaders to maximise sales (NFI).

Duties of the Commercial Director include:

  • Will work with the Sales Leaders, as well as the Global Head of Marketing, to drive business development into targeted accounts, as set out by The Board.
  • Responsible for the execution of strategic and operational Customer Relationship activities via Salt’s Key account management (KAM) Strategy.
  • Formulate and own KAM plans for clients that are updated each week in line with quarterly and annual targets.
  • Target C-Suite hires and retained search campaigns to drive a top-down approach to business development and maximise large fees.
  • Provide market feedback to the company leadership regarding competitive offerings, prospect needs and generate product development ideas.
  • Assist the Managing Director to hire, develop and retain Sales Leaders and Consultants to build and own specialist Digital Universes.
  • Provide feedback to the sales teams and The Board on NPS scores whilst following up on cases to improve customer experience and create new business opportunities.
  • Working to stringent targets, you’ll be required to adopt a professional and knowledgeable approach to each new business call and meeting.
  • Planning and coordinating the implementation of business plans and the penetration of new markets.
  • Adherence to Salt Pillars through weekly kick-offs and wraps, weekly sales meetings and 121s, strengthening the adoption of the Salt operating model.

Requirements of the role:

  • Meet personal and team billing target of (to be agreed and set with MD)
  • Support the Managing Director to achieve consistency of NFI in line with 2022/2023 growth plans
  • Positive NPS score
  • A clear business development strategy for the Johannesburg/Gauteng region
  • Evidence of working with senior management to align sales strategies and solutions (in line with Global KAM Strategy and Salt:X Solutions, Marketing collateral)
  • Excellent negotiation skills (average fees/margins 20%+)
  • Ability to shape the culture and build a high performing environment in the Johannesburg office
  • Report to the Managing Director on divisional pipeline and core metrics
  • Train and develop staff to ensure best practice and high performance
